713 students get disaster tolerant materials in Sundarganj
As many as 713 students studying at 5 schools located at disaster prone areas under Sundarganj upazila in the district got disaster tolerant materials from a Gabandha base non-government development organization SKS Foundation this noon.
In this regard, a simple function was also held on the premises of Belka MC High School under Belka union this morning around 11 AM at the initiative of SKS Foundation under School Led Community Resilience Disaster and Climate Risks (SLCR DCR) Project funded by Muslim Aid UK Bangladesh Country office.
Assistant commissioner (Land) and executive magistrate Md. Masudur Rahman attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest on behalf of UNO Raz Kumar Biswas while upazila secondary education officer Md. Jahedul Islam spoke at the ceremony as the special guest.
Social workers Professor Mazedul Islam, Mahmudul Islam Pramanik and project manger Afroza Bulbul addressed the function among others while head teacher of Belka MC High School Ahsan Habib Khokon presided over the ceremony.
The chief guest in his speeches thanked the concerned for providing the students with disaster tolerant materials in a bid to run their studies smoothly during the emergencies invcluding flood and heavy rainfall.
Project manager Afroza Bulbul said a number of academic institutions are located in disaster prone 6 unions- Tarapur, Belka, Horipur, Chandipur, Sreepur and Kapasia under Sundarganj Upazila in the district. Of them, 5 schools of the unions have been brought under the project.
As one mighty river Teesta blows through the unions, the schools remain closed during the flood,, that is why, academic activities of the students are hampered seriously. To turn the schools into disaster resilient ones in order to run the academic acitivities okayed and continued during the emergency caused by flood, SKS Foundation is doing renovation works at 5 schools of the unions under the project funded by Muslim Aid Bangladesh, She added.
Distributing disaster tolerant materials to the students of the schools was one of the objectives of the project, she further added.
Accordingly, disaster tolerant materials like umbrella and rain proofed bags were distributed to 713 students of 5 schools today, she concluded.
All beneficiary students, their guardians, teachers, invited persons, local elite and journalists were present on the occasion.
