UIU MARINER qualifies for the 2025 World Championship MATE ROV Competition

The UIU MARINER team from United International University (UIU) has qualified in the 2025 World Championship MATE ROV Competition, organized by the Marine Technology Society.

This is one of the most prestigious competitions for university students in the field of marine robotics. The event will be held from June 17–21, 2025, in Alpena, Michigan, USA.

The Advanced Underwater Robotics and Automation (AURA) crew of United International University recently performed a live demonstration, showcasing their self-built ROV. During the demonstration, the robot successfully retrieved plastic bottles and tangled fishing lines from a lake.

This has not only highlighted the robot’s capabilities in environmental cleanup but also has reflected the team’s dedication to environmental stewardship and disaster prevention.

In just five months, the AURA crew developed six marine robot prototypes, including Hydra Archeleon 2.0 and Hydra Octobot 2.0, marking a significant achievement in rapid prototyping and engineering innovation at UIU. Although the project has been underway for less than a year, this rapid prototyping cycle allowed the team to iterate designs, validate key systems, and ultimately pave the way for their latest and most capable platform, Hydra Scorpion.

Their modular design supports a variety of missions, from shipwreck surveys to underwater infrastructure repairs. The UIU MARINER team was led by Anika Tabassum Orchi and Farhan Zaman as project manager and head of research and development. The team was supervised by Prof. Dr. A.K.M. Muzahidul Islam, Engr. Fahim Hafiz and Engr. Saifur Rahman, faculty members of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UIU.

In June 2025, the newly minted UIU MARINER team will be traveling to Alpena, Michigan, to represent Bangladesh on the world stage, becoming the first university from the country to do so.

Backed by the support and encouragement of the UIU community, the team carries with them not just cutting-edge technology, but also the pride and hopes of an entire nation. The support from UIU authorities will undoubtedly provide a vital boost to the team’s morale and performance in this prestigious global competition.
