The ARCUS 1.0 held at UIU
The Association of Civil Engineering Students (ACES) the student club of the Department of Civil Engineering at United International University (UIU) organized “The ARCUS 1.0” yesterday at UIU campus.
It is a regional civil engineering-based competitive program aimed at bringing together students from leading universities on a common platform.
More than 300 participants from universities across the Dhaka region took part in the event, which encouraged students to apply their academic knowledge, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills to practical engineering challenges.
The event was organized in collaboration with the American Concrete Institute (ACI) UAP Student Chapter, NSU Civil Engineering Club, ACI Student Chapter–IUBAT, East West University Civil Engineering Club, ACI UITS Student Chapter, BUBT Civil Engineering Club, and Civil Engineering Club of Dhaka International University (DIU).
Prof. Dr. M. Shamim Z. Bosunia, Professor Emeritus, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Asia Pacific (UAP) was present as the Chief Guest and Prof. Dr. Md. Tarek Uddin, PEng., Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Islamic University of Technology (IUT) and President of ACI Bangladesh Chapter was present as the Guest of Honour in the program.
Prof. Dr. Md. Abul Kashem Mia, Vice-Chancellor, UIU presided over the program and the welcome address was delivered by Prof. Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman, Department of Civil Engineering, UIU.
Chief Guest Prof. Dr. Bosunia emphasized the importance of hard work, perseverance, discipline, and observation in an engineer’s professional life. He also highlighted the growing importance of seismic resilience, climate adaptation, durability, carbon reduction, and recycled materials.
Dr. Tarek Uddin encouraged students to explore sustainable construction practices, including low-carbon, carbon-neutral, and carbon-negative concrete. Dr. Mujibur Rahman urged students to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to address the challenges posed by climate change.
Prof. Dr. Abul Kashem Mia praised ACES and the Department of Civil Engineering for organizing the event and emphasized that competitions help students develop intellectual abilities, discover their interests, and gain practical experience. He encouraged students to uphold honesty, integrity, and effective time management.
ARCUS 1.0 featured five competition segments. Unpredictable (UIU) won ArcSpan–Truss Competition, while Dynamic Frames (IUBAT) won ArcDrift–Seismic Competition. Team Concrete Evidence (NSU) became champion in ArcTitron–Paper Tower Challenge, ZeroHero (NSU) won Arcology–Poster Presentation and উপলব্ধিউপলব্ধি (UIU) secured the championship in Arcography–Video Presentation.
Through ARCUS 1.0, UIU ACES and the Department of Civil Engineering successfully created a platform that connected classroom learning with real-world engineering challenges while promoting innovation, sustainability, teamwork, creativity, and practical problem-solving among future civil engineers.
The faculty members, students, officials, academicians, corporate officials, journalists and other distinguished guests were present in the program.
