
Mock Drills Save Lives and Property
Speakers in a function here said mock drill regarding taking early preparations before flood could play important role in reducing loss of lives and properties in flood prone areas.
“As the district is located in flood prone area due to geographical location, the district experiences seasonal floods every year creating untold sufferings to the people. Due to flood, the people of flood prone areas here face several damages in various sectors including agriculture, livestock, fisheries, communication and education. In a word, their sorrows know no bound.
If early preparations are adopted considering their disadvantages and sorrows during the flood, their sufferings and sorrows would reduce and the amount of losses of lives and properties would also decrease as well”, they also said
They made the comments while they were addressing a discussion meeting on Simulation on the National Early Action Protocol on Moon soon Riverine Flood on the ground of NH Modern High School of the town here on Saturday noon.
Department of Disaster Management and Relief under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief arranged the function in cooperation with Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, CARE Bangladesh, Concern Worldwide, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), FRIENDSHIP, IFRC, RIMES, Save the Children, SKS Foundation, Start Network and World Food Program (WFP).
Additional secretary of the Ministry of Disater Management and Relief KM Abdul Wadud addressed the function as the chief guest while director general of of Department of Disaster management Razwanur Rahman presided over the ceremony that was also addressed among others by additional secretary(Relief), Ministry of disaster management and Relief Md. Rabiul Islam, head of Resilience innovation, WFP Siddiqul Islam Khan, deputy country.
director-program, CARE Emebet Menna, deputy director of the department of agricultural extension Khorshed Alam Sarker and district relief and rehabilitation officer Shafiqul Islam.
Deputy Country director of Save the children Mithun Datta in his brief speeches said said Save the Children has been working in Gaibandha district for a long time and is implementing multiple projects in the district. As the district faces seasonal flood every year creating untold sufferings and sorrows during the flood.
In this context, a mock drill regarding taking early preparation would help the people of flood prone areas to be aware and to take early preparations that would reduce the amount of losses caused by flood.
Considering it, the mock drill has been arranged here at the initiative of department of disaster management and relief in cooperation with different NGos and donor organizations, he added.
This mock drill would undoubtedly enhance the efficiency and capacity of the volunteers of different organizations in case of conducting their voluntary works during the emergency through reducing loss of lives and properties, he expected.
Later, a successful mock drill regarding taking early preparations was held through active participation of all volunteers coming from different organizations.
At last, the speakers also emphasized the need for activating the union disaster management committee so that they could conduct their activities after hearing flood forecasting information from the concerned authority.
A large number of people of flood prone areas, NGO activists, government officials and journalists of print and electronic media attended the program.
