Media one of major pillars of democracy: Andaleeve

Information and Broadcasting Minister Andaleeve Rahman today said journalists play a key role in flourishing democracy so that media is considered as one of the most important pillars of democracy.  

He made the remarks while addressing an event marking the 43rd founding anniversary of the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy here.

Referring to the risks and challenges faced by crime reporters, the minister said crime reporters work under tremendous risk as at times, they have to pay a very high price for it. 

"It is true that adequate protection or an effective system has yet to be established for those working in the journalism profession in Bangladesh," he said.

Pledging to stand by journalists whenever they have any reasonable need, the minister said, "Whenever you feel that something is necessary, contact me. Together, we will solve the problems. The government is by your side."

CRAB President Mirza Mehedi Tamal chaired the event which was moderated by its General Secretary M. M. Badshah.
