BRACU organizes Ayesha Abed Memorial Women’s Cricket Tournament 2025
BRAC University organized the first Ayesha Abed Memorial Women’s Cricket Tournament 2025 on the Merul Badda campus in Dhaka recently celebrating talent, teamwork and the spirit of women in sports.
Ayesha Hasan Abed was a social worker, an organizer, and a visionary who had worked tirelessly with Sir Fazle Hasan Abed towards organizing and transforming the lives of people living in poverty during the formative days of BRAC.
At the core of her philosophy was the quest to ensure the welfare of the people who were oppressed by the social systems pervasive in Bangladesh.
The daylong tournament on 20 August 2025 was hosted by the Sports & Fitness Department with support from student club Cricket BRAC University at the Multipurpose Hall and featured five teams, namely “Protidondi”, “Oporajita”, “Durjoyee”, “Ognikonna” and “Jagoroni”.
In the final match, team “Durjoyee” beat team “Ognikonna” by 9 wickets chasing 99 runs in 6 overs and clinching the champions trophy, which was handed over by Registrar David Dowland.
The runner-up trophy and three prizes—the player of the final, player of the tournament and the player with the most sixes—were also presented through a ceremony.
Addressing the event, Shaharear Sayeed, Director of the Human Resources Department, announced that he would try to organize a match between the BRAC University women’s cricket team and that of North South University.
Sadia Hamid Kazi, Chairperson and Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, urged the players to retain their enthusiasm for sports alongside their studies.
Professor Shaila Sultana, Director of the BRAC Institute of Languages, said it was nice to see all the encouragement that the women were getting as it was quite different in her early years.
She urged the players to take forward the spirit of womanhood and to aim to secure a place at the national level.
Nausheen Ahmed, Head of Internal Audit and Compliance, recommended that the players continue to bravely face challenges and to never be disheartened.
Jewel Datta, Senior Manager, Sports & Fitness Department, expressed hope to organize an inter-university women’s cricket tournament soon.
