Popularizing Consumers’ Rights Protection Act 2009 underscored

Speakers in a function here yesterday underscored the need for popularizing the Consumers’ Rights Protection Act 2009 through its proper implementation here in the greater interest of the consumers. “To provide and fulfill the basic needs of the consumers and to ensure better consumer protection and easier access to justice, Consumers’ Right Protection Act 2009 was enacted,” they said. They made the comments while addressing a briefing session and the Implementation of Consumers’ Rights Protection Act 2009 at the conference room of District Collectorate Building here on Wednesday afternoon. District administration and Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection (DCRP) jointly organized the function to focus the law and to provide ideas about the law to the people from all sections of the society. Additional district Magistrate Robiul Hasan presided over the function while Deputy Commissioner(DC) and also District Magistrate Abdul Matin addressed it as the chief guest. The function was also addressed, among others, by general secretary of consumer association of Bangladesh, district unit, Md. Saiful Alam Saka, district information officer Mahfuzar, freedom fighter Maksuder Rahman Sahan and member of Gaibandha Chamber of Commerce and Industry Abdur Rashid Sarker. The speakers in their speeches said the consumers of the country would be highly benefited and their rights would also be protected for enacting the law by the present government in case of purchasing the essential commodities from the traders. Earlier, a key not paper on this theme was presented by assistant director of district office of DCRP Abdus Salam Talukder through multimedia projector in details. AD Abdus Salam Talukder said there was no specific law on the protection of consumer’s right in Bangladesh for a long time and the rights were protected through various enactments. The criticisms were that the law was fragmented and also provided inadequate consumer protection, he also said. The law on consumer rights enacted by the present government not only prohibits adulteration, hoarding, smuggling, black marketing, cheating in weight and measurement of selling products at higher price but also provides punishments for such acts, he commented. Considering the consumer rights as a basic human rights as part of right of life, DC Abdul Matin in his concluding speeches sought whole hearted cooperation of all stakeholders to implement the law in the district properly. More than 50 government officials, civil society members and workers of rights groups including journalists participated in the function.
